Melissa’s Story

“It was hard at first, but I already had so many people here, which really helped.”

Melissa was on the waiting list for years before she finally moved to Willow Tree Lodge. She really wanted to live at David’s House after becoming friends with several residents while at Indian Trails camp. They would always tell her great things about living at David’s House. “I was ready to move out to get a fresh start, a little independence, and be around other people who understood my abilities.” Even though she has enjoyed moving out, she still loves that her mom is able to come and visit her every week.

As an only child, it was difficult learning to live with other people, but Melissa said it feels like she has gained 5 sisters! This has been really helpful for Melissa this last year. Two months before moving in, Melissa’s father passed away. It has been a difficult transition as holidays and birthdays were special times with her dad. But the support from other residents, staff, the chaplain, and her new “sisters” has made it a little easier.

Melissa’s energy is contagious and we are so glad to have her as part of the David’s House family.
