Our Founding Story

Jay and Lois DeBoer never expected their family's experience would inspire a ministry that would impact so many lives. As they planned for the future of their son, David, who had cerebral palsy, they began searching for long-term care options. What they found left them unsettled. The available choices did not reflect the quality of life, dignity, and care they hoped he would experience.

For years, David remained at home, supported by his family and a caring church community. During that time, Jay and Lois continued to wonder what the future would hold, not only for David but also for other families facing the same challenge. A conversation with close friends sparked an idea: rather than searching endlessly for the right place, perhaps they were being called to help create it.

With the support of dedicated volunteers, community partners, and a shared vision for something better, the dream of David's House began to take shape. After years of planning, prayer, and God’s providence, the first David's House home opened in 1987, welcoming ten men, including David.

What began as one family's desire to create a better future for their son became a lasting legacy of care, community, and hope for generations to come.

“We fundamentally believe that every person on this earth is created in God’s image. That doesn’t exclude people with disabilities. The care we provide is drawn from and compelled by this worldview as we work to meet the needs of each resident wholly—physically, socially and spiritually.”
